Artist Statement:

By embracing simplicity and movement, geometric and organic forms, sinuous line, and a tapestry of personal narrative, my work seeks to engage the senses, spark curiosity, and inspire reflection on the interconnectedness of our experiences and the world around us.

Artist Bio

Amy Stewart is a Detroit-born abstract artist currently based in North Charleston, South Carolina, where she lives with her wife and creates and teaches from a private backyard studio. A graduate of College for Creative Studies, Stewart’s work draws influence from Alexander Calder, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee, blending intuitive movement with layered structural rhythm.

Her process is reactive and instinct-driven. Stewart often begins with coordinates — points of tension, direction, or possibility — then builds connections between them, allowing each mark to alter the next. The result is work that feels both chaotic and deliberate: visual maps of collision, movement, and human interconnectedness.

Stewart’s paintings explore the unseen networks linking people, choices, and experiences. Through intersecting forms, shifting paths, and dynamic compositions, she examines how every action creates a ripple effect — how diverse lives cross, diverge, and unknowingly shape one another. Her work suggests that connection is unavoidable, even when invisible.

In addition to exhibiting in galleries throughout South Carolina, Stewart previously taught at Art Institute of Charleston and was selected as the 2025 poster artist for the North Charleston Arts Fest.
