Artist Statement:
As a resident of Summerville’s historic district, I observe and record the changes I see daily. OUR TOWN is experiencing rapid growth, and I’d like to create a visual inventory of Summerville while documenting how our community is grappling with the challenges that are not unique to Summerville. Across the country, what were once “small towns” weigh the pros and cons of progress. I admire the structures, both large and architecturally detailed, and the humble cottages that were carefully built long ago in Summerville. Hanna Vann
Location: Studio 10, Downstairs
Hanna grew up in Summerville, SC. She attended the College of Charleston where she graduated in 2013 with two bachelor’s degrees - one in biology and another in religious studies. She earned a certificate in clinical massage therapy in 2017 and a master’s degree in psychology in 2022. Hanna has been a crafter and maker since childhood. Four years ago she discovered junk journals, which combined her lifelong love of writing and journaling with making and mixed media art. Since then, she has deep dived into all areas of bookmaking and mixed media art. Hanna’s art can be found for sale at her booth at Antiques and Artisans off Old Trolley Rd in Summerville and in her studio at PWAC. “As an artist, my work is a celebration of femininity and color. I create pieces that explore the beauty and complexity of the human experience, using my art as a tool to express my own emotions and to connect with others. I love creating art that people can actually use. My junk journals and art journals are not only my artistic expressions themselves, but also a vehicle to inspire and hold the creativity of others.”
