Current Exhibits
Exhibitions are selected by our exhibition committee with strong intention to showcase the works of a diverse array of local, regional, and occasionally national artists. It is important that all visitors see themselves represented through our lineup of shows and that we “pass the microphone” to as many unique voices as we can through this creative outlet while highlighting a variety of mediums. Artist Statement:
As a resident of Summerville’s historic district, I observe and record the changes I see daily. OUR TOWN is experiencing rapid growth, and I’d like to create a visual inventory of Summerville while documenting how our community is grappling with the challenges that are not unique to Summerville. Across the country, what were once “small towns” weigh the pros and cons of progress. I admire the structures, both large and architecturally detailed, and the humble cottages that were carefully built long ago in Summerville. A friend shared the name of South Carolina landscape architect Robert E. Marvin who said that before WWll the streets, homes, garden...

West Gallery | March 19th — May 16th | Opening Reception: March 19th from 5:30pm — 8:30pm
Tom Stanley | Artist Statement:
I have looked forward to this exhibition with Paul Matheny for a couple of reasons. For one, I had never exhibited with Paul although many of our interests continue to intertwine here and there. Exhibiting new and older work sounded like a possibility that might make sense. We met at Winthrop University in the early 1990s. Looking back and seeing our work over the years is a revelation. And I will leave it at that.
My artwork is produced in series that share size, color, or imagery. Recurring shapes like triangles and visual symbols like houses and boats appear in the work. I use acrylic on canvas and paper and graphic stategies like mechan...

Curated by Tom Stanley and Paul Matheny.
Curator's Statement:
Paperworks by Gene Merritt (1936-2015) is a small re-introduction of drawings that Merritt had actually called paperwork. Merritt's work illustrates a common interest between Paul Matheny and Tom Stanley (currently on exhibit in the West Gallery). Merritt was a self-taught artist that Matheny and Stanley encountered and befriended in Rock Hill, SC. Little did they know he would emerge as an internationally reknowned artist of the Outsider genre.
The idea of work was vital to Merritt’s identity. He considered himself an artist-businessman during his roughly 15 years of drawing, in part because he was looked upon as ...
