Wednesdays 4/30, 5/14, 21, 28, 6/4, 7-9pm, 5 weeks: Oil Painting Grisaille Techniques For All Skill Levels

April 30, 2025 @ 7:00 pm - June 4, 2025 @ 9:00 pm
$220.00

NO CLASS 5/7

When you look at paintings at a museum, do you feel a little lost when it comes to their technique? Have you always wanted to learn how to paint in oils, but don’t know quite how to handle the materials? This class will give you a brand new perspective and deeper understanding of oil painting, as well as equip you with practical tools that anyone can use at home or in the studio.

Beginning by tracings from high-quality prints, students may choose imagery that suits their own level of skill and experience.

We will be walking through four types of grisaille techniques that ANYONE can do:

  1. Black and white and verdaccio (Medieval, Renaissance)
  2. Optical gray scumble over warm ground (Baroque)
  3. Alla prima wipeout on white ground (Impressionist, modern)
  4. Alla prima duotone over gray ground (Impressionist, modern)

To make the most out of our five weeks, there will be (fun) homework assignments for each technique.

Suggested supplies:

-Paint brushes for oil painting, various sizes.
-Palette (wood, glass, or pad of gray palette paper).
-Small palette cups or small baby food jars.
-Oil paints (titanium white, burnt sienna, burnt umber, black. (Instructor will provide materials for students who may be short on materials)
-Paper towels

Instructor will provide gessoed paper for projects, but students may feel free to bring their own gessoed panels or canvases if they prefer. Instructor will provide walnut oil medium.

Meet the Teacher:

Seasoned figure instructor, Stephen Cefalo presents life drawing classes that are laid back, conversational, friendly, and densely informative. Trained at School of Visual Arts in New York, Cefalo studied painting with many of the greatest painters of his time. Formerly an illustrator at Nickelodeon and instructor at Indiana University, Art Academy of Cincinnati, and University of Arkansas, he now works full time as a portrait artist and fine art painter. He believes in positivity, meeting each student at their skill level, teaching by asking questions, and by demonstrations.
