Meet the Teacher, Robin Hippel:

A graduate in Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Georgia, Robin relocated from Georgia to Cape May, New Jersey in 1982 where she set up a studio, taught at the Cape May County Art League and her home studio, and raised a family with her husband, stained glass artist Bruce Hippel. She has shown work in various galleries and studios including the Soma Gallery in Cape May and the Clay College in Millville, NJ. After 36 years, she has relocated to Summerville, South Carolina and volunteers at Public Works Art Center.

“My vision following college was to create one of a kind clay designs and functional art as opposed to production pottery. Designing and redesigning the form has always been my favorite part of the process. I found that an evolution occurred that taught me something extraordinary. Experimentation established my style. I discovered porcelain clay through Minnesota potters Michael and Sandra Simon. Their beautifully mastered forms constructed with this temperamental creamy white clay exuding Japanese traditions, excited my eye. I followed the work of my favorite potter Michael Simon over many years. My forte is wheel work, altering the form and adding textured slabs and handles for enhancement and functionality. Taken to the edge with a paddle and a fettling knife, the form can become more refined while remaining simple and unique. As time passed, I learned to be a good production potter as well.”
