Pottery: Wheel & Hand Building: Wednesdays 6/10-7/1, 6-8pm, 4 weeks
This class is for first time beginners with no experience to Intermediate level students interested in learning new techniques and doing new projects. Each week for three weeks, we will spend half of each class time hand building with pinching, coiling, and wet slab construction. We will spend the other half wheel throwing, finishing with glazing in the 4th week. A focus specifically on wheel throwing is also possible if that’s ones focus. Join us and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere within the Summerville community while learning the art of working with clay in numerous ways.
If you’re interested in scheduling a private group pottery class outside of the dates listed, please reach out to pottery@publicworksartcenter.
Meet the Teacher: Robin Hippel
A graduate in Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Georgia, Robin worked in studios in Georgia, New Jersey, and South Carolina teaching and creating pots. She has shown work in various galleries and studios including the Soma Gallery in Cape May and the Clay College in Millville, NJ. She enjoys raw and refined Japanese ceramics, Italian majolica, and a variety of international contemporary artists. She curated the Seagrove potter’s “Another Clay Community” ceramics exhibition at the Public Works January to March of 2025.
“My vision following college was to create one of a kind clay designs and functional art. Designing and and building forms became my favorite part of the process. I found that an evolution occurred which taught me something extraordinary repeatedly. Experimentation established my style and continues to do so. I discovered porcelain clay and followed the work of favored potter Michael Simon over many years. I work primarily on the potters wheel, altering the form and adding textured slab additions for enhancement and functionality. Taken to the edge with a paddle and a fettling knife, the form can become more refined while remaining simple and unique. I learned to be a good production potter as well.”
