SUMMARY:Hi/Lo | Katelyn Chapman and Andrew Blanchard
DESCRIPTION:West & East Gallery | July 16th — September 5th | Opening Reception: July 16th from 5:30pm — 8:30pm \nKatelyn Chapman | Artist Statement \nMy work explores episodes of working-class life in America’s rural South through the lens of my own family and friends in the Midlands of South Carolina. I index my upbringing in this place by referencing backroad dispositions in conjunction with symbols of faith and Christian iconography. By painting these accounts\, I celebrate\, honor\, and show reverence towards the customs and traditions of the rural working-class South. \nRelying on rich history\, storytelling\, and the ephemeral quality of change that span past\, present\, and future tenses; I primarily focus on the function of the still life in rural spaces—both wild and domestic—as practical makeshifts and collections. The work often toys with paradox and humor to buttress these themes through depictions of off-the-grid habits as they relate solely to living off the land. These ideas are crucial to building messages that point dually towards the literal and figurative challenges and undertakings in the Bible Belt region. In the American South\, this notion provides perspective on larger societal issues that point to a past that can’t be thrown away\, but instead lingers on into the present. \nKatelyn Chapman | Artist Bio \nKatelyn Chapman received an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Georgia in 2018 and a BFA with an emphasis in Drawing from Clemson University in 2014. Her work is inspired by her deeply rooted familial and rural ties to the South and has been in both national and local group exhibitions and published internationally. Chapman is a three-time Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grantee (’19\, ’21\, & ’24) and is the 2026 Griffith-Reyburn Low Country Artist of the Year. She has been awarded residency fellowships to attend Vermont Studio Center (’19)\, The Hambidge Center (’21)\, and The Gibbes Museum of Art (’24) among others. At the end of 2023 she left her full-time job as a Professor of Art to fully pursue her art career. She is represented by Southside Gallery in Oxford\, MS and Hampton III Gallery in Taylors\, SC. Chapman currently lives and works in Charleston\, SC where she paints from her home studio and leads artist workshops both online and in person. \nWebsite: katelynschapman.com\nInstagram: @kschap \nAndrew Blanchard | Artist Statement \nFor more than a decade\, my work has volleyed between personal-reflection and the presence of objective visual reportage. Double entendre is ever more present in which pseudo-religious\, socio-political\, and quasi-racial curiosities are embellished by a hybrid of print and photographic processes and techniques. Mother Nature coupled with humanity’s imbalance often share space within my works\, indicating that notions of community activism and brotherly love are often plagued when partisanship overshadows civility. My works also touch upon\nprickly issues such as boundaries and division\, as well as the balance that can be found by summoning yesteryear wistfulness\, negative or positive. \nFrom having to regularly survive storms along the MS Gulf Coast as a kid to witnessing the magnitude of destruction from hurricane Katrina as a young adult\, much of my artwork has incorporated water-centric abnormalities\, calamities\, and the awe-inducing prowess of Mother Nature’s revenge from the impact of humankind. Storms like the recent Helene have me wondering if there is anywhere to reside without escaping her wrath\, and how one navigates obstacles such as access to potable water\, inconsistent precipitation\, and the hope for sustainable solutions going forward. \nAndrew Blanchard | Artist Bio \nAndrew Blanchard grew up wild in the swamps of Louisiana and Mississippi. The Ole Miss Art Department found him naked\, removed a thorn from his paw and awarded him an MFA. To date he has avoided jail and is currently a Full Professor of Studio Art at Converse University in Spartanburg\, SC\, as well as a life-long resident of the MS Gulf Coast. His work resides in the permanent collections of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson\, and it is featured or forthcoming in publications including Ecotone\, Electric Dirt\, The Hand\, Printmakers Today\, New American Paintings\, the International Painting Annual (nos. 4 and 7)\, Southwest Review\, the Oxford American and ROOTED. He is represented by Southside Gallery in Oxford\, MS and LeMieux Gallery in New Orleans\, LA. \nWebsite: andrewblanchard.net

SUMMARY:Eternal Theater | Chloe Hogan
DESCRIPTION:South Gallery | July 16th — September 5th | Opening Reception: July 16th from 5:30pm — 8:30pm \nArtist Statement \nEternal Theater is a series of paintings about performance as a double-edged gesture: a way of hiding and a way of being known. A form of escape and a search for meaning. Created over the last six months\, these paintings explore the space between seeing and being seen\, concealment and revelation\, the backstage and the stage. The work draws from American art history while connecting personal struggles to collective ones. The old American way of life has shed its skin and put on a costume. We keep performing it anyway. This show is about that tension. The beauty and the horror of the constant escapism required to be alive today. But Eternal Theater is also about love. Love as the only antidote. Art as a way to make sense of it all. A way to stay present. A way to keep looking. \nArtist Bio \nChloe Hogan (b. 1998\, based in Charleston\, SC) creates layered\, emotionally charged paintings that explore memory\, identity\, and the process of becoming. Drawing from figuration\, abstraction\, and intuition\, her work navigates transformation\, reflection\, and the evolving story of selfhood over time. \nWebsite: chloehogan.com\nInstagram: @chloe_hogan_art

SUMMARY:Pottery for Kids Ages 6-14: Wednesdays 8/12-26\, 4-5:30pm\, 3 weeks
DESCRIPTION:This pottery class is designed for young artists to have the opportunity to explore the world of clay with the focus primarily on hand-building techniques. Over four consecutive sessions\, they’ll learn to shape\, sculpt\, and create unique pieces using methods like pinching\, coiling\, and slab construction\, encouraging their creativity and fine motor skills. As a special highlight\, the class also offers a chance to experience the potter’s wheel\, where children can feel the excitement of forming a vessel on a spinning surface. After their creations have been carefully crafted\, they’ll undergo a bisque firing\, turning the clay into sturdy\, unglazed pottery. In the final session\, students will apply colorful glazes to their pieces\, which will then be fired again\, resulting in beautiful\, finished artworks. This combination of traditional hand-building\, introductory wheel work\, and the complete pottery process makes the class both fun and educational\, providing a well-rounded introduction to the art of pottery. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMy name is Anna Wilkins\, and I am a proud native Wyomingite\, now residing in Summerville. My passion for art\, specifically in ceramics\, began in high school and deepened as I took college courses in ceramics and worked at the university studio as an onsite manager at Montana State University of Billings. I graduated with a B.A. in psychology\, but continued my love for the ceramics world by teaching ceramics to kids at a summer camp in Maine. Then my husband and I began traveling around the U.S. for work\, and later took a sabbatical to travel internationally\, where I expanded my ceramics education by creating in places like Japan\, Portugal\, and Mexico. \nI’m excited to get back into teaching ceramics because it brings me immense joy to inspire others\, spread my knowledge of pottery\, and share the art of ceramics with people eager to learn and create. \n*Pottery must be picked up within 90 days from the last day of class. The teacher will email you to let you know when it is ready for pick up. Any artwork not picked up within this timeframe will be donated or discarded.*

SUMMARY:Stop Motion for Elementary Students: Tuesdays\, 8/18-9/8\, 3:30-5pm\, 4 weeks
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, kids learn the basics of stop motion animation and see how creativity and imagination can create real life magic. We build simple sets\, make characters\, and bring them to life one frame at a time. I teach them how animation works\, and they learn the full stop motion process from planning and setup to capturing each frame. By the end\, they’ve learned to animate on their own and get to see their ideas come to life on screen. It’s hands-on\, creative\, and a great way for kids to learn something new while having a blast doing it. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMeet the Teacher: Trent Shy \nMy name is Trent Shy\, and I’ve been obsessed with art for as long as I can remember. I’ve always loved trying new forms of art\, and the second I feel like I understand one\, I’m usually off learning another. About 15 years ago I picked stop motion back up after making little Lego animations as a kid\, and this time it really stuck. I started making animations on my kitchen floor for my kids just for fun and began posting them online. They took off\, and before I knew it I was getting millions of views and opportunities to work for major brands. From there\, stop motion animation became my full-time focus. \nNow\, years later\, I’m still creating every day\, just in my own studio instead of on the kitchen floor. I specialize in clay animation and have worked with companies like Adobe\, A24\, MTV\, New Balance\, and more\, with my work reaching hundreds of millions of viewers online. I’m also a dad to three boys and have always loved teaching. After getting every kid in the neighborhood into animation\, I started teaching classes for elementary through high school students. I love watching kids surprise themselves with what they can create\, and I do all of it for the same reason I started… because being creative is just plain fun.

DESCRIPTION:My name is Jessica Smith and I am an art teacher at Alston-Bailey Elementary. I teach art summer camps at Public Works as well! I am excited to begin teaching after school art at Public Works! One of my favorite things as an educator is watching children express themselves in a creative way. I am looking forward to helping them make projects that allow them to express and show off their creative individuality!\n\n\n\nIn my after school art class students will work with a variety of wet and dry mediums. For example\, painting projects with watercolor and tempera paint. In addition\, projects will be created with oil pastel and pencil as well. Some projects will be mixed media incorporating both wet & dry mediums. Students will use paint combined with materials such as markers\, pencils\, sharpies\, etc. I look forward to creating meaningful and fun art with your children at Public Works!

SUMMARY:Sound Bath Meditation: Once a Month on Tuesday evenings\, 6:30-7:30pm
DESCRIPTION:A sound bath is a guided meditative\, restorative experience where participants are “bathed” in soothing sounds\, resonant tones\, and vibrations produced by instruments like singing bowls and chimes. Benefits of this experience include stress reduction\, deep relaxation\, and enhancement of mental clarity and focus. These sessions create a unique opportunity for participants to rest\, unwind\, reset. \nPlease dress comfortably and be sure to bring a yoga mat or something soft to lie on. For added comfort and relaxation\, you’re welcome to bring a pillow or bolster\, a blanket\, and an eye mask. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMeet the Teacher\, Jennifer Ferrara: \nHello! I’m Jennifer\, a Wellness Facilitator and Sound Bath Practitioner with a passion for helping others find moments of peace\, balance\, and connection in today’s busy world. I hold a Master of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a minor in English. My educational background\, combined with a long-time interest in mindfulness and personal well-being\, has shaped my approach to creating unique\, meaningful wellness experiences. I believe that everyone needs and deserves the opportunity to slow down and reconnect with themselves. That belief and a love for the unique experience a sound bath provides\, inspired me to create welcoming spaces where people can step away from the demands of everyday life and simply rest\, reflect\, and restore. It is a privilege to share these experiences with others\, and I look forward to welcoming you to a session.

SUMMARY:Pottery: Wheel & Hand Building: Wednesdays 9/9-30\, 6-8pm\, 4 weeks
DESCRIPTION:This class is for first time beginners with no experience to Intermediate level students interested in learning new techniques and doing new projects. Each week for three weeks\, we will spend half of each class time hand building with pinching\, coiling\, and wet slab construction. We will spend the other half wheel throwing\, finishing with glazing in the 4th week. A focus specifically on wheel throwing is also possible if that’s ones focus. Join us and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere within the Summerville community while learning the art of working with clay in numerous ways. \nIf you’re interested in scheduling a private group pottery class outside of the dates listed\, please reach out to pottery@publicworksartcenter.org. \nMeet the Teacher: Robin Hippel \nA graduate in Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Georgia\, Robin worked in studios in Georgia\, New Jersey\, and South Carolina teaching and creating pots. She has shown work in various galleries and studios including the Soma Gallery in Cape May and the Clay College in Millville\, NJ. She enjoys raw and refined Japanese ceramics\, Italian majolica\, and a variety of international contemporary artists. She curated the Seagrove potter’s “Another Clay Community” ceramics exhibition at the Public Works January to March of 2025. \n“My vision following college was to create one of a kind clay designs and functional art. Designing and and building forms became my favorite part of the process. I found that an evolution occurred which taught me something extraordinary repeatedly. Experimentation established my style and continues to do so. I discovered porcelain clay and followed the work of favored potter Michael Simon over many years. I work primarily on the potters wheel\, altering the form and adding textured slab additions for enhancement and functionality. Taken to the edge with a paddle and a fettling knife\, the form can become more refined while remaining simple and unique. I learned to be a good production potter as well.”

SUMMARY:Clay Witch Hats and Incense Workshop: Saturday September 19\, 10am-12pm
DESCRIPTION:Witches hats and incense\, oh my! Join Maike Kowal in the pottery studio first and get creative making your hand built one-of-a-kind witches hat incense holders (up to four) and then join Andrea Davis of Motherland Essentials in the adjacent classroom to make your own incense cones (multiple scents to choose from!) \nMeet the Teachers\, Maike and Andrea: \nMaike has been clay sculpting since a very young age. The process of manipulating clay into a recognizable form is exciting to her and she loves sharing her knowledge to hopefully ignite a similar passion for working with clay in others. Maike is also the head of our pottery program (family) at Public Works Art Center. \nI started Motherland Essentials in 2015 after experiencing the loss of my son\, Elijah\, 20 weeks into my pregnancy the year prior. I didn’t receive resources for mental health\, so I decided to lean into creative self-care to help me find community and provide a way for me to not feel so bad during a really heavy time. I found soap-making videos on YouTube\, and after my first batch (which was really bad)\, I was hooked and determined to perfect the craft. After sharing my journey on Instagram\, building my self-care community and perfecting many more batches of soap\, I decided to open my business and introduce creative self-care to others. Through my work\, I have been blessed with partnerships and features with Brambleberry\, Wholesale Supplies Plus\, BuzzFeed\, Essence\, Apartment Therapy\, and more. However\, I am most proud to contribute to community organizations such as Mugs 4 Moms\, Fresh Future Farms\, and the Avery Research Center for African American History & Culture\, many others. Through my art of soap-making and opportunities to teach in my creative self-care studio and virtually\, our mission is to provide collective community care by way of quality products and educational creative self-care workshops. \n

SUMMARY:Painting the Portrait from Life: Tuesday-Friday\, September 22-25\, 10am-4pm
DESCRIPTION:Hone your painting skills by learning to paint using the live model as our subject. Painting from Life will enhance all areas of your painting repertoire; Painting a subject that forces the artist to “see” objectively will launch painting skills to the next level! Values\, Color Temperature\, Edge variety & Brushwork\, Color mixing and Form are some of what will be explored. All levels are welcome (some experience in oil painting is recommended). \nInstructor demonstrations will guide & inspire you; then individual/personal instruction will carry you through the rest of the painting day.  \n*Mary will be sharing a supply list as we get closer to the start date of class.* \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMet your instructor\, Mary Hoffman: \nBFA in Fine Art\, teaching experience includes teaching Life Drawing & Portrait Painting in Hilton Head Island 1993-1996\, Gibbes Studio Class Rooms 1996-1998\, Currently continuing to teach Portraiture & Plein Air Workshops in various places around the Southeast. I love painting the Portrait and sharing how to create “realistic” portraits that feel “painterly\,” There is no greater feeling than when students get that “Ah Ha” moment and breakthrough to their next level of their painting skill. \nA 1989 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art in Cleveland Ohio\, Mary L. Hoffman doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t drawing and painting. As her artistic skills developed over the years\, Mary realized the joy of drawing and painting the figure and portrait. \nSoon after graduating\, Mary joined the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors and entered several of their juried Fine Art Shows and Exhibits; one of which earned her the “Best of Show” title as well as many “Third Place” and “Honorable Mention” ribbons. Her final exhibit with The Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors was a large\, week- long One-Woman Show which launched her artistic journey to the Southeast. \nHilton Head Island\, SC is where Mary taught Life Drawing\, Portrait Painting and Basic Drawing classes a few weeks of the year and continued her Portrait business. \nFor the past four decades\, CEO’s\, Universities and collectors from all over the world have commissioned Mary for her elegant portraits of various mediums. Some of her well-known portrait clients include The University of Dayton\, Actress and Model Andie MacDowell\, and NHL Hockey Legend Mark Messier. \nIn addition to teaching in Hilton Head Island\, Mary also taught Life Drawing\, Portrait Painting and Basic Drawing classes at The Gibbes Museum of Art’s Gibbes Studio in Downtown Charleston South Carolina. \nIn 2005\, Mary realized a deeper dimension to her art when she attended her first Plein Air Painting workshop. Mary paints each week alongside fellow artists and friends en Plein Air. Today\, Mary enjoys combining her love of the portrait and figure with painting En Plein Air teaching workshops\, figure classes and painting the Portrait from life. \nHer work is documented on her website: www.MaryHoffmanFineArt.com where one can view and purchase original art and her blog\, “Mary’s Paintings” http://maryspaintingaday.blogspot.com

SUMMARY:Pottery for Homeschoolers: Wednesdays 9/30-10/14\, 10-11:30am\, 3 weeks
DESCRIPTION:This pottery class is designed for young artists ages 6-14 to have the opportunity to explore the world of clay with the focus primarily on hand-building techniques. Over three consecutive sessions\, they’ll learn to shape\, sculpt\, and create unique pieces using methods like pinching\, coiling\, and slab construction\, encouraging their creativity and fine motor skills.

SUMMARY:Pottery: Wheel & Hand Building: Wednesdays 10/7-28\, 6-8pm\, 4 weeks
