SUMMARY:Tuesdays 4/14-5/19\, 10-11:30am\, 6 weeks: Sewing for Homeschoolers
DESCRIPTION:This 6-week session continues to expand on the foundational skills learned in previous courses\, giving students even more opportunities to explore creativity through practical\, hands-on sewing projects. \nThroughout this session\, students will refine their sewing machine techniques\, practice precision stitching\, and take on new challenges like pattern reading\, layering fabrics\, and assembling multi-step projects. Each class is designed to strengthen their confidence and independence while encouraging creative expression and problem-solving. \nBy the end of the session\, students will have completed several projects that combine both skill and imagination- perfect for those ready to take their sewing to the next level! \nAll materials\, supplies\, and equipment are provided. This session is best suited for returning students or beginners with prior basic sewing experience. \nMeet the Teacher: Ashley Huff \nAshley is a fourth-generation seamstress who grew up with a needle and thread in hand. While she launched Slash Alterations in 2014 to offer professional sewing services\, her true passion lies in passing on the timeless art of sewing to the next generation. \nOver the past five years\, Ashley has hosted sewing classes at multiple schools\, helping kids discover the joy of creating with their hands. She believes sewing builds more than just skills—it fosters confidence\, patience\, and creativity in every child. \nThrough her classes\, Ashley is committed to creating a welcoming\, encouraging environment where young learners can develop practical skills and a lifelong love for craftsmanship.

SUMMARY:Thursdays 4/16-5/21\, 4-5pm\, 6 weeks: After School Art for Elementary Students ages 6+
DESCRIPTION:My name is Jessica Smith and I am an art teacher at Alston-Bailey Elementary. I teach art summer camps at Public Works as well! I am excited to begin teaching after school art at Public Works! One of my favorite things as an educator is watching children express themselves in a creative way. I believe art provides children with an outlet to learn\, grow\, and explore art mediums they may not use on a regular basis. I am looking forward to helping them make projects that allow them to express and show off their creative individuality!\n\n\n\nIn my after school art class students will work with a variety of wet and dry mediums. For example\, painting projects with watercolor and tempera paint. In addition\, projects will be created with oil pastel and pencil as well. Some projects will be mixed media incorporating both wet & dry mediums. Students will use paint combined with materials such as markers\, pencils\, sharpies\, etc. I look forward to creating meaningful and fun art with your children at Public Works!

We spent lots of time taking pictures and developing them. \nJohn Lindroth is a studio artist here at Public Works Art Center\, currently in studio 7 (downstairs). He is a professional photographer specializing in high-end headshots\, individual portraiture. With his passion for both technical precision\, artistic value\, and human connection\, he creates stress-free\, enjoyable sessions that bring out his clients’ best. His work blends commercial and artistic photography. His natural and comfortable style ensures that every subject looks and feels their best. He also has a personal interest in fine-art photos. In 2008\, he discovered that you can use old lenses on new cameras. The images created with old lenses provide a unique quality\, only available with this technique. He will be displaying some prints for sale of close-up imagery of local interests\, using film-era lenses on digital cameras\, and some of his other favorite fine art photos.

SUMMARY:GODBODY: The Femme | Curated by Ty Davis
DESCRIPTION:West Gallery | May 21st — July 11th | Opening Reception: May 21st from 5:30pm — 8:30pm \nCurator Statement: \nThere’s a certain kind of power that only gets called dangerous when it lives in a Black woman’s body. \nGODBODY: THE FEMME is a celebration but it isn’t a feel-good celebration or a string of affirmations. It’s fourteen artists sitting down together to wrestle with what it means to live in a body that’s been policed\, preached over\, sexualized without permission\, and expected to hold everyone else up while being treated like it doesn’t matter. \nThese artists\, Kela\, Samira\, Kanish\, Kalah\, Jada\, Tiana\, Nathalie\, Kei\, Denise\, Antonette\, Christine\, Skigh\, Desiree\, and Barinwa all come from different worlds and different practices\, but they all share one stubborn refusal: they won’t make themselves smaller to make other people comfortable. \nI came into this project trying to listen more than I spoke. So with the help of Asiah Mae’s perspective as collaborator and advisor\, the exhibition is stronger. The work that scares power the most is work that refuses to explain itself or shrink itself for approval. That’s what I asked from each of these artists. \nAt the center of the exhibition is COUNTED\, a quiet but defiant installation. We’re simply asking people to sit down and write their name in a ledger. That’s it. In a time when laws are actively trying to erase certain bodies from public life\, the simple act of being seen and recorded becomes radical. The book will fill up over the run of the show and become the piece itself. \nGODBODY THE FEMME runs May 21 through July 11\, 2026 at Public Works Art Center\, West Gallery\, Summerville\, South Carolina. \nCome through. Sit down. Write your name. \nArtist Bio \nTy Davis is a Charleston-based abstract painter\, curator\, and founder of Tiguere Contemporary\, an independent curatorial platform dedicated to elevating the work of emerging and underrepreseted artists. His curatorial practice centers on community engagement\, cultural reflection\, and the visibility of Black voices within contemporary art. \nAs both artist and curator\, Davis approaches exhibitions as spaces for dialogue and healing\, bridging art\, identity\, and lived experience. His projects aim to expand public understanding of the Black experience while creating opportunities for connection and empowerment through visual culture. \nInstagram: @TiguereContempo\nWebsite: TiguereContemporary.com

SUMMARY:Intersections | Amy Stewart
DESCRIPTION:East Gallery | May 21st — July 11th | Opening Reception: May 21st from 5:30pm — 8:30pm \nArtist Statement: \nBy embracing simplicity and movement\, geometric and organic forms\, sinuous line\, and a tapestry of personal narrative\, my work seeks to engage the senses\, spark curiosity\, and inspire reflection on the interconnectedness of our experiences and the world around us. \nArtist Bio \nAmy Stewart is a Detroit-born abstract artist currently based in North Charleston\, South Carolina\, where she lives with her wife and creates and teaches from a private backyard studio. A graduate of College for Creative Studies\, Stewart’s work draws influence from Alexander Calder\, Wassily Kandinsky\, and Paul Klee\, blending intuitive movement with layered structural rhythm. \nHer process is reactive and instinct-driven. Stewart often begins with coordinates — points of tension\, direction\, or possibility — then builds connections between them\, allowing each mark to alter the next. The result is work that feels both chaotic and deliberate: visual maps of collision\, movement\, and human interconnectedness. \nStewart’s paintings explore the unseen networks linking people\, choices\, and experiences. Through intersecting forms\, shifting paths\, and dynamic compositions\, she examines how every action creates a ripple effect — how diverse lives cross\, diverge\, and unknowingly shape one another. Her work suggests that connection is unavoidable\, even when invisible. \nIn addition to exhibiting in galleries throughout South Carolina\, Stewart previously taught at Art Institute of Charleston and was selected as the 2025 poster artist for the North Charleston Arts Fest. \nInstagram: @empressofcreativity\nWebsite: amystewartart.com

SUMMARY:Wildlife In Wool | Sarah Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Vault | May 21st — July 11th | Opening Reception: May 21st from 5:30pm — 8:30pm \nArtist Statement: \nWildlife in Wool: An Animal Scavenger Hunt \nStep into a playful world of discovery at Wildlife in Wool\, an interactive art exhibition featuring needle felted animals inspired by the wildlife of South Carolina. Hidden throughout the vault\, these lifelike wool sculptures invite visitors to become explorers as they search for birds\, mammals\, and other creatures that call the region home. \nCreated through the intricate process of needle felting\, each sculpture captures the character\, movement\, and personality of the animals it represents. As visitors move through the exhibition\, they are encouraged to look closely\, investigate their surroundings\, and see how many animals they can find along the way. \nDesigned especially for children—and the young at heart—this exhibition turns the gallery into an imaginative scavenger hunt. A special “petting zoo” area allows visitors to gently touch and interact with select fiber animals\, offering a hands-on opportunity to experience the textures and artistry of needle felting up close. \nWildlife in Wool is both an art exhibition and an adventure—an invitation to explore\, observe\, and celebrate the incredible animals that share our world. \nArtist Bio \nSarah Mitchell is a fiber artist who creates lifelike sculptures of birds and animals through the process of needle felting. Using a small barbed needle to repeatedly interlock wool fibers\, she carefully builds each sculpture layer by layer\, creating detailed forms with a soft\, realistic finish. \nEach piece begins with a wire armature that provides structure and allows the sculpture to be posed in natural\, expressive ways. Mitchell then blends and shapes wool fibers over the frame\, gradually building texture\, color\, and form until the animal comes to life. \nHer work is deeply influenced by the natural world. Through careful observation of wildlife\, she studies how animals sit\, rest\, and move\, translating those subtle gestures into fiber. Her goal is not only to capture the appearance of the animal\, but also its character and sense of motion—creating sculptures that feel as though they could step or take flight from their wooden mounts at any moment. \nHer work is currently represented by galleries in South Carolina including Art on the Square Gallery in Summerville\, Charleston Fine Craft Gallery in Charleston\, and the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro. \nFacebook: Wooly Wildlife\nInstagram: @Wooly_Wildlife\nWebsite: www.woolywildlife.com

SUMMARY:Our Society Needs To ____! | Nick C. Cerrato
DESCRIPTION:North Gallery | May 21st — July 11th | Opening Reception: May 21st from 5:30pm — 8:30pm \nArtist Statement: \nWe are souls trapped in our human form. Can we judge upon our souls? It is like my paintings\, if you look at my paintings at the surface they look colorful but if you look deeper you will see their stories. \nArtist Bio \nDespite my physical challenges\, all of my life\, art took a big part. When I was younger\, I was painting on an HP computer and using the paint program\, and I was getting pretty good at it\, but I stopped beacuse anyone could copy them. When I was 12 in 2011\, I asked my mom if we had canvases\, and she said\, “Let me look\,” and we had two canvases. My mom asked me\, “How are you planning to paint?” I gestured with my feet\, and she put the canvas by my feet. I told her what colors I was painting\, and I am painting ever since. I developed more styles of painting beacuse of this show\, asking for help to bring my visions to the canvas and using my whole human form. \nWebsite: djwheelsart.com

SUMMARY:Painting the Portrait from Life: May 26-29\, 10am-4pm
DESCRIPTION:Hone your painting skills by learning to paint using the live model as our subject. Painting from Life will enhance all areas of your painting repertoire; Painting a subject that forces the artist to “see” objectively will launch painting skills to the next level! Values\, Color Temperature\, Edge variety & Brushwork\, Color mixing and Form are some of what will be explored. All levels are welcome (some experience in oil painting is recommended). \nInstructor demonstrations will guide & inspire you; then individual/personal instruction will carry you through the rest of the painting day.  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBFA in Fine Art\, teaching experience includes teaching Life Drawing & Portrait Painting in Hilton Head Island 1993-1996\, Gibbes Studio Class Rooms 1996-1998\, Current Continue teaching Portraiture & Plein Air Workshops in various places around the Southeast. I love painting the Portrait and sharing how to create “realistic” portraits that feel “painterly\,” There is no greater feeling than when students get that “Ah Ha” moment and breakthrough to their next level of their painting skill. \nA 1989 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art in Cleveland Ohio\, Mary L. Hoffman doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t drawing and painting. As her artistic skills developed over the years\, Mary realized the joy of drawing and painting the figure and portrait. \nSoon after graduating\, Mary joined the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors and entered several of their juried Fine Art Shows and Exhibits; one of which earned her the “Best of Show” title as well as many “Third Place” and “Honorable Mention” ribbons. Her final exhibit with The Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors was a large\, week- long One-Woman Show which launched her artistic journey to the Southeast. \nHilton Head Island\, SC is where Mary taught Life Drawing\, Portrait Painting and Basic Drawing classes a few weeks of the year and continued her Portrait business. \nFor the past four decades\, CEO’s\, Universities and collectors from all over the world have commissioned Mary for her elegant portraits of various mediums. Some of her well-known portrait clients include The University of Dayton\, Actress and Model Andie MacDowell\, and NHL Hockey Legend Mark Messier. \nIn addition to teaching in Hilton Head Island\, Mary also taught Life Drawing\, Portrait Painting and Basic Drawing classes at The Gibbes Museum of Art’s Gibbes Studio in Downtown Charleston South Carolina. \nIn 2005\, Mary realized a deeper dimension to her art when she attended her first Plein Air Painting workshop. Mary paints each week alongside fellow artists and friends en Plein Air. Today\, Mary enjoys combining her love of the portrait and figure with painting En Plein Air teaching workshops\, figure classes and painting the Portrait from life. \nHer work is documented on her website: www.MaryHoffmanFineArt.com where one can view and purchase original art and her blog\, “Mary’s Paintings” http://maryspaintingaday.blogspot.com

My passion for art\, specifically in ceramics\, began in high school and deepened as I took college courses in ceramics and worked at the university studio as an onsite manager at Montana State University of Billings. I graduated with a B.A. in psychology\, but continued my love for the ceramics world by teaching ceramics to kids at a summer camp in Maine. Then my husband and I began traveling around the U.S. for work\, and later took a sabbatical to travel internationally\, where I expanded my ceramics education by creating in places like Japan\, Portugal\, and Mexico. \nI’m excited to get back into teaching ceramics because it brings me immense joy to inspire others\, spread my knowledge of pottery\, and share the art of ceramics with people eager to learn and create.

SUMMARY:Pottery: Wheel & Hand Building: Wednesdays 6/10-7/1\, 6-8pm\, 4 weeks
DESCRIPTION:This class is for first time beginners with no experience to Intermediate level students interested in learning new techniques and doing new projects. Each week for three weeks\, we will spend half of each class time hand building with pinching\, coiling\, and wet slab construction. We will spend the other half wheel throwing\, finishing with glazing in the 4th week. A focus specifically on wheel throwing is also possible if that’s ones focus. Join us and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere within the Summerville community while learning the art of working with clay in numerous ways. \nIf you’re interested in scheduling a private group pottery class outside of the dates listed\, please reach out to pottery@publicworksartcenter.org. \nMeet the Teacher: Robin Hippel \nA graduate in Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Georgia\, Robin worked in studios in Georgia\, New Jersey\, and South Carolina teaching and creating pots. She has shown work in various galleries and studios including the Soma Gallery in Cape May and the Clay College in Millville\, NJ. She enjoys raw and refined Japanese ceramics\, Italian majolica\, and a variety of international contemporary artists. She curated the Seagrove potter’s “Another Clay Community” ceramics exhibition at the Public Works January to March of 2025. \n“My vision following college was to create one of a kind clay designs and functional art. Designing and and building forms became my favorite part of the process. I found that an evolution occurred which taught me something extraordinary repeatedly. Experimentation established my style and continues to do so. I discovered porcelain clay and followed the work of favored potter Michael Simon over many years. I work primarily on the potters wheel\, altering the form and adding textured slab additions for enhancement and functionality. Taken to the edge with a paddle and a fettling knife\, the form can become more refined while remaining simple and unique. I learned to be a good production potter as well.”

SUMMARY:Summer Clay Camp! 6/22-24\, 9-11:30am\, ages 6-8
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun and creative three-day Clay Camp. Each day\, campers will complete a unique handbuilding project using a variety of techniques\, then finish their pieces with colorful glazes. In addition to handbuilding\, everyone will have the opportunity to try the pottery wheel and create their own thrown piece. This camp is perfect for young artists who love to explore\, get a little messy\, and make something special with their own hands! Ages 6-8. \nMeet the Teacher \nMy name is Anna Wilkins\, and I am a proud native Wyomingite\, now residing in Summerville.

SUMMARY:Summer Sewing Camp! 6/22-25\, 9am-12pm
DESCRIPTION:If your child is curious about sewing this is the place to start! This hands-on four-day sewing camp is specially designed for beginner sewists aged 7-13! Running Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM\, this program offers an introduction to the world of machine sewing. \nCampers will begin their journey with a thorough introduction to the sewing machine\, its parts and how to operate it safely and confidently. They will quickly master fundamental techniques such as sewing straight lines\, backstitch\, and turning corners. Each day will consist of guided sewing skills with time for “free sewing” to put the skills they learned and their creativity to the test. The main project for this camp will be creating their very own custom pair of cotton shorts! \nThis camp is a wonderful opportunity for youth to develop practical sewing skills\, foster patience and precision\, and take part in creating a handmade garment from start to finish. \nPlease remember to bring a snack and a drink each day to keep energized for all the sewing fun! \nAll material and supplies included.
